Mercy | St. John’s Hospital Surgery & Laboratory Expansion

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Construction of this major St. Louis medical center expansion began in the spring of 1989, delivering nearly 85,000 SF of new and renovated healthcare facilities. The project substantially enhanced the hospital’s surgical, diagnostic, and support services through the expansion of operating rooms, surgery preparation and recovery areas, family waiting spaces, the morgue, and Histology, Cytology, and Cytogenetic Laboratories. The work required meticulous planning,
phased construction, and close coordination with hospital staff to guarantee uninterrupted patient care and continuous operation of critical medical services throughout the project. A significant mid-project enhancement involved the addition of a dedicated specimen transport rail system connecting the Operating Rooms to the laboratory facilities. Nicknamed the “Screamin’ Eagle,” the system was incorporated after construction was already underway, requiring
the project team to accommodate a substantial design change while maintaining schedule and operational commitments. Upon completion, the expansion improved clinical workflows, increased capacity for surgical and laboratory services, and provided modernized facilities designed to support the medical center’s continued growth and deliveryof high-quality patient care.
